ACROSS AMERICA — Nothing exemplifies the ideals of the American family quite like a front porch, in the years before air conditioning a place for the family to gather in the cool twilight and recount the happenings of the day.

Porches are making a comeback. During the early days of the pandemic when no one was vaccinated, people who had porches found an open-air setting where they could meet face-to-face with their family, friends and neighbors, even if they did wear masks while doing it.

Of about 999,000 single-family homes started in 2020, about 65 percent came with porches, according to the Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction. The trend continued, with 63 percent of the 1.1 million homes started in 2021 having porches.
