Brazil continues their unbeaten run, defeating France 3-2 in an exciting match at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium in São Paulo. However, after two straight won sets, Brazil was knocked down and kept on the boards by “Les Bleues” until the tie-break and the score 9-12 for France, when Canarinhos claimed 6 points in a row and finished of the game. In the second match of Group A, Poland, tie-break aficionados, handled Argentina, achieving a premiere win in the World League 2013.

Set one was close, with France leading 8-6 at the first technical timeout. Brazil got back in the set and Bruno Rezende’s block gave them the lead for the first time at 9-8. They then streaked ahead with four points in a row, and Lucas Saatkamp’s spike gave them the set, 25-20.
Brazil jumped to a 8-5 lead in the second set. Good French serving got the Europeans 13-10 in front, but Brazil’s excellent offence rallied and with Leandro Vissotto and Eder Carbonera playing well, they took the set 25-19.
In set three Brazil edged ahead, and looked like they may take a straight set win, but France fought back well, with a run of four points getting them to 20-16 ahead. They held on to win 25-22.
France continued their momentum in set four, going 8-5 and 16-14 up. With a fine kill from spiker Earvin Ngapeth, they edged further ahead and won the set 25-21.
The decisive set was close, too, with good blocks from both sides. ‘Les Bleues’ gained an advantage (8-6) and changed sides. Great block and defenses cooperation lets France to increase the led 12-9 and … lost focus and self-confidence at all. Ervin Ngapeth did not take advantage a clean action, Nicolas Le Goff missed to the middle while Brazil switched on its block. With setter William and opposite spiker Wallace playing superbly, Brazil’s class began to show. They narrowly won the set, 15-12, and the match.
French spiker Earvin Ngapeth was the match’s top scorer with 24 points. Ricardo Lucarelli led the Brazilian scoring with 21 points.
Poland – Argentina 3 – 2 (26-24, 19-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-8)

The first set started well for Poland as they quickly gained three-point advantage (8-5 at the first TTO). They remained ahead throughout the set forcing Argentina’s head coach Javier Weber to make some replacements at 17-16 for the Poles. After that they managed to level the score at 24-24 giving the spectators a real thriller. In the end it was Poland who took the set 26-24.
In the beginning of set 2 the play maintained on a point-by-point basis up until the first TTO (Poland leading 8-7) after which Argentina jumped ahead to 14-9. The hosts clearly had lost their focus and made many errors, leading to coach Andrea Anastasi changing setters (Fabian Drzyzga replaced Lukasz Zygadlo). Nevertheless, they were unable to catch the opponent and Argentina easily picked up the second set 25-19, setting the overall score st 1-1.
Argentina carried the momentum from the previous set and quickly jumped ahead to 7-1 at the beginning of the next one, which lead to Jakub Jarosz replacing Zbigniew Bartman as a wing-spiker in team Poland. The guests remained in control over the game and the rest of the set was a display of the Argentinian domination. They won 25-19 an took the lead in the match 2-1.
In set 4, Jakub Jarosz stayed on the court, as he was the best scorer for Poland in the previous one. The White-Reds began strongly motivated and determined to level the overall score. They gained a seven-point lead (16-9) thanks to Bartosz Kurek and his powerful serves, which gave the guests much trouble. Poland was unstoppable and took the set 25-17 setting the overall score at 2-2.

The play in the final set was very fierce, but the Poles jumped ahead when Kurek started serving again at 6-3. They increased the advantage to five points at the first TTO and the rest of the set showed the White-Red power. They won the set 15-8 ant the entire match 3-2.
Bartosz Kurek was chosen man of the match. He posted 27 points involving 22 in attack, 4 aces and one killing block. Bartman’s substitute, Jakub Jarosz collected 18 points (62% in spiking). Among Argentina, Bruno Romanutti contributed 23 with 61% of efficiency.
