ACROSS AMERICA — Thousands of cases of Sargento brand cheese products sold to businesses in 15 states have been recalled as part of a massive listeria outbreak linked to the California dairy company Rizo-López Food, according to the FDA.
The recall includes Cotija, Parmesan, Swiss Asiago, Monterey Jack, white cheddar, bistro blends, Italian, taco, and queso products, according to an event notice posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website.
The cheeses were sold in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.

A spokesperson for Sargento told Patch in a statement that the news stemmed from a Rizo-Lopez Foods recall last month of its Cotija cheese due to a related listeria outbreak.
“As soon as we became aware of the issue, we further investigated and determined that this recall impacted a limited amount of the Food Service and Ingredients products,” the statement said. “On February 5, out of an abundance of caution, Sargento voluntarily recalled the products that were supplied by Rizo-Lopez Foods Inc. and products that were packaged on the same lines.”

The company added: “This recall did not impact Sargento-branded products. Sargento immediately terminated its relationship with Rizo-Lopez Foods Inc. and immediately notified our customers. As a family-owned company, the safety and quality of our products are our highest priority.”
As Patch previously reported, numerous dairy products have been recalled in recent weeks as part of the FDA’s investigation into listeria, including chicken street taco meal kits and corn bites, salad products sold at Walmart, Costco and Winco, and multiple products sold at Trader Joe’s. It also includes sandwiches and rolls, and a black bean dip.
The listeria outbreak has resulted in 26 illnesses, 23 hospitalizations and two deaths across 11 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
