A unique cricket tournament to promote Sanskrit is underway in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal.

Amidst the chants of mantras on Wednesday, the Vedic Brahmins cricket tournament started at Ankur Khel Maidan, number 6. Pandits clad in traditional dhoti and kurtas from different regions are participating.

The annual four-day event is being held, under the guidance of Pandit Ankur Acharya and Abhishek Shastri, to mark the birth anniversary of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Commentary In Sanskrit

Players are those who perform rituals as per the Vedas. They speak to each other in Sanskrit and the match commentary is also in Sanskrit. 

The umpiring in the game is also done in Sanskrit.

The Maharshi Cup, organised for the third year, aims to promote the ancient Sanskrit language and sportsmanship among the Vedic family. 

Teams from various Vedic institutions are participating in this tournament. 

Matches played with a tennis ball

The matches are set to be ten overs each, and a tennis ball is used for the gameplay. 

The winners will be rewarded with a sum of Rs 31,000, while the runner-up and second runner-up will get Rs 21,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively.

Also, each of the participating players will get a souvenir.

In the inaugural ceremony, the chairman, CRISP, Shrikant Patil, the media in-charge, BJP, Lokendra Parashar and others were present.

National-level tournament in pipeline

“Tournament aims to preserve Sanskrit and Sanskriti (culture). We have been organising this for the last three years and will continue to organise such events in future. By next year, we are planning to schedule it on a national level,” Pandit Ankur Acharya told the Free Press Journal.
