QUEENS, NY — Barack Obama endorsed the upstart democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress on Monday — more than three months after she effectively ousted a powerful incumbent lawmaker.

The Bronx-born Ocasio-Cortez was among more than 200 candidates for state and federal offices that Obama backed Monday ahead of November’s midterm elections. She’ll likely cruise to victory over the Republican Anthony Pappas in the 14th Congressional District, which covers neighborhoods in northern Queens and The Bronx.

“Today, I’m proud to endorse even more Democratic candidates who aren’t just running against something, but for something—to expand opportunity for all of us and to restore dignity, honor, and compassion to public service,” Obama said on Twitter.

Ocasio-Cortez didn’t make Obama’s first round of endorsements in August, which came a little more than a month after she scored a stunning Democratic primary victory over Rep. Joe Crowley. He’s been in Congress for nearly two decades and was reportedly in the running to be his caucus’s next leader.

But Obama has since come out in favor of “Medicare for All,” the universal health care proposal supported left-wing candidates such as Ocasio-Cortez. She also backs policies such as a federal jobs guarantee and the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Obama also endorsed Max Rose, the Democrat looking to oust Republican Rep. Dan Donovan in Staten Island’s 11th Congressional District — the GOP’s only House seat in New York City.

Obama’s “support is a reflection of the grassroots campaign we’re running,” Rose said on Twitter. “Every day, we’re fighting to change our politics, just like he called for years ago.”
