Sometimes the world of the British royals can be predictable, mostly because of the strict rule book they all adhere to. It’s just the way it is.

As many have pointed out time and time again, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry take a more lenient approach to some mandates — with good reason — and getting married has not changed that. Prince Harry is the latest to make what is arguably a protocol gaffe, but his willingness to do it just proves that maybe the rules themselves shouldn’t be followed so rigidly.

Harry and Meghan spent Tuesday greeting fans in New Zealand’s Auckland Viaduct Harbour, including a young 6-year-old boy named Otia Nante. According to E! News, when Otia’s grandmother told Harry that the young boy had also lost his mother, the prince was visibly touched. 

“Life will always be all right. You know that?” Harry told the boy. “I’ve made it to 34 years old and life is great. I have a beautiful wife and a baby on the way. Your life is going to be sorted. Don’t you worry about that.”

As everyone knows, Harry tragically lost his mom Princess Diana when he was only 12 years old, so his empathetic response to Otia isn’t at all surprising. He and Otia even took an adorable smiling selfie together … which was a clear breech of the royal rule stating that no selfies are allowed on official visits.

Thank goodness Harry doesn’t take that too seriously. Sometimes, as Meghan can also attest, abandoning a rule and simply taking a photo is the kindest course of action.
