A top progressive group is getting behind Rep. Keith Ellison’s (D-Minn.) bid to be the next Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman, giving the Minnesota Democrat another key ally as he prepares for a challenge from Labor Secretary Tom Perez. Democracy for America – a grassroots progressive group founded by former DNC chairman Howard Dean, who dropped out of the race earlier this month – announced Tuesday that Ellison won 87 percent support from its members. ADVERTISEMENTNew Hampshire DNC chairman Raymond Buckley and South Carolina DNC chairman Jaime Harrison were also on the ballot. He is viewed by some of the 447 DNC members who will vote in the February election as too far to the left. And he’s been dogged by past controversial remarks about U.S. support for Israel. Buzz has been building around Perez, who will meet with President Obama this week and has a conference call planned with state Democratic chairmen on Wednesday to discuss the future of the party.
