Before the afternoon of Friday, December 15, Ibrahim Abu Thurayeh was known in Gaza for two things: his unusual way of washing cars and his determination to protest against Israel.
The 29-year-old Palestinian lost both legs to an Israeli airstrike in 2008 and so he would lift himself from his wheelchair onto a car bonnet and balance on his stumps as he wiped the windscreen clean. He made about seven shekels (£1.50) a day.
