HOUSTON, TX — It’s an out of this world celebration weekend as Houston and the surrounding communities commemorate the first landing on the lunar surface. On July 20, 1969, Astronaut Neil Armstrong made history when he became the first man to walk on the moon.

Fifty years later, Americans will celebrate the moon landing with special observances, but none will likely be as significant as those taking place in Houston.

Houstonians will be celebrating galore and honoring the first lunar landing in a number of surrounding communities and cities, and everyone is invited.

Here are a few happening this weekend:

One Giant Leap: Apollo 11 Moon Landing Celebration| The Woodlands Children’s Museum| Friday, July 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.| Something that’s just for the kids. One Giant Leap to Celebrate the moon landing in 1969. Children can create a special commemorative art project in the Muse, explore NISE KIT floor programs and get hands-on experimenting with Galactic Slime. It’s a real kid blast.

Apollo Day At George Observatory| Needville, TX| Saturday at 10 a.m.| George Observatory will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing with highlights of past and future moon landings with speakers and activities. Observers can use telescopes at the observatory to will show planets and deep space objects. Telescope tickets are available at the George Observatory Gift Shop. Tickets are $7-$10; free for kids under 12.

Celebrate The 50th Anniversary Moon Landing At Galveston’s Pleasure Pier| Saturday-Sunday| Join the fun at Pleasure Pier this weekend and celebrate the 1969 Moon Landing of Apollo 11. Saturday at 8np.m. will feature a NASA provided movie on the event, and on Sunday, its another movie at sunset. There will also be Astronaut Ice Cream available at Lolli & Pop’s on the Pier!

Skyfest: A Celebration of Apollo 11: Lunar and Planetary Institute in Clear Lake invites the public to experience Sky Fest — “Apollo 11: Looking Back to Move Forward” from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. This free public event features presentations from planetary scientists, hands-on educational activities, planetarium shows, a library open house, and more. All ages are invited as we learn more about our nearest neighbor in space – the Moon.

Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Celebration in Tomball| Saturday, July 20| The City of Tomball will be celebrating the lunar landing on weekends throughout the month with two NASA themed dioramas, educational videos, a display of Apollo mission patches and more at the historic 1907 Railroad Depot Museum. One diorama represents the Apollo 11 landing on the moon’s surface at Tranquility Base , while the second diorama pays tribute to the little known NASA Railroad that played an integral part in the manned space program at Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. On Saturday, July 20, guests will receive free Astronaut ice cream sandwiches while supplies last. Depot mascot Rusty Rails will be on hand in his space attire to meet and greet guests, too.

Summer Festival: Celebrating the Moon| Saturday 5-10 p.m. at Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts| Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing and the exhibition Shooting the Moon: Photographs from the Museum’s Collection 50 Years after Apollo 11. In the spirit of community and collaboration, join the fun at this summer festival filled with music, art activities, games, and more for all age

Space Center Houston: Space Center Houston is hosting an out of this world festival in honor of the 50th Anniversary of man landing on the lunar surface. The Apollo 11 50th Live festival is presented by JSC Federal Credit Union, and features a Family STEM Zone with hands-on activities, robotic challenges and Apollo-themed learning experiences.

Discovery Green: On Saturday, everyone in Houston is invited to Discovery Green for the Giant Leap celebration, and take part in the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing.

The family-themed celebration takes place from 6 to 10 op.m. and will feature a host of space-themed exhibitions and discussions, stargazing, interactive photo opportunities, a film screening, an artisan and collectible market and more. The U.S. Army’s elite Golden Knights parachute team will also make a dramatic entrance with an aerial demonstration.

Moonpies, a classic southern snack, will also be available from the Grove, Discovery Green’s on-site, award-winning destination restaurant.

The artisan moon pies will be available in two flavors: classic and chocolate for $5 each. The Grove will also offer $10 Moonwalk cocktails, created specifically to commemorate the first moon landing. These special menu items will be available from July 15 to 27.

The event culminates in a dramatic countdown to 9:56 p.m., 50 years to the minute when Neil Armstrong took his first step on the surface of the moon. Click here for full event information and a schedule of events for a Giant Leap at Discovery Green.
