In October, the City Council voted 12-1 for the concept for the building. It would be on the vacant land southwest of York and Lexington streets, between the hospital and Ebel’s Ace Hardware.

With its approval, the council required the hospital to submit a final development plan for the building within six months.

That deadline is coming April 2.

In an email last week, the developer’s attorney, Michael Roth, said the hospital is undergoing overall planning for its local buildings.

The outcome of the planning, he said, will have a direct impact on the medical office building’s precise design.

The hospital expects the planning to be done by late summer. As such, Roth asked for a six-month extension.

Under a plan presented last year, Minneapolis-based Ryan Companies, a major developer in the Chicago suburbs, will construct a 65,000-square-foot building, which Elmhurst Hospital will use.

Neighbors expressed concerns about how the building would impact them, but the council received indications that changes to the plan satisfied them. Houses on Kendall Avenue would be behind the structure.

On Monday, a council committee plans to take up the issue of the six-month extension.
