LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Behind an offensive explosion and a gritty pitching performance against national-ranked competition, East Carolina’s Alex Mycek and Baylor’s Kelsee Selman earned Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division I National Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played Feb. 27-March, announced the Association on Tuesday afternoon.

Mycek was a one-person wrecking crew for the Pirates last week, launching six home runs, knocking in 14 and slugging an astronomical 2.308. Reaching base safely in all six contests, the junior catcher hit .769 (10-for-13) with eight extra-base hits (6 HR, 2 2B), seven runs scored, six walks and an .850 on-base percentage. A native of Clayton, Del., Mycek homered in four games, including multi-homer performances versus Portland State and Seton Hall at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Stockton, Calif. Mycek, who was also selected American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, registered five RBI against Portland State and reached base safely in all five plate appearances (2-for-2, HR, 3 BB) in a 15-14 victory over Seton Hall in the Pirates’ tournament finale.

“It is truly an honor to be selected as National Player of the week,” said Mycek. “As a team, we brought a ton of energy and heart this weekend. I’m just glad I was able to contribute to our success. This is huge, not only for myself, but also for the future of our program.”

Selman, selected the big 12 Pitcher of the Week, was a key factor in Baylor posting a 4-1 mark against elite competition at the Judi Garman Classic. The senior hurler posted three wins and a save against four nationally-ranked foes, including a two-hit shutout of then-No. 14 Michigan. Additionally, the Lufkin, Texas native captured victories over No. 8 Washington and then-No. 14 UCLA, while earning a save against then-No. 20 Arizona State. Facing some of the top offensive lineups in the country, Selman scattered 15 hits, struck out 14 in 19.1 innings of work. She fanned a weekend-best six against the Wolverines and allowed just a run on five hits with five strikeouts versus the Huskies.

“All I can really speak of when it comes to this honor is to tell you that this is a testament of God’s faithfulness and mercy,” Selman said. “I am so happy to be able to contribute to this team that is so talented. I don’t have to worry about a thing because I know they will do whatever it takes to get outs. There are no words to describe what this team, these coaches, and this university means to me.”
