TRUMBULL, CT — During a special planting ceremony Wednesday morning, residents joined Parks and Recreation and members of the Conservation Commission and Long Hill Garden Club in planting bulbs at the town’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park.

First Selectman Vicki Tesoro thanked those in attendance as they planted alliums and daffodils for helping beautify Trumbull, something the town takes great pride in.

“This is a beautiful town,” Tesoro said, “and all that we do together to make it more beautiful just enhances the community, and people love it. People love this park…I can’t wait to see what it’s going to look like in the spring.”

Recreation Program Manager Noreen Wilpiszeski said the bulbs planted Wednesday morning were expected to bloom in the spring, along with other fairly newer plantings in and around the park.

“This park has actually undergone some massive renovations,” Wilpiszeski said, “so it will be really beautiful in the spring to see it come completely to life.”

According to Tesoro, Trumbull has the most open space of any community of its size in the state, and it takes a lot of work to maintain all of it.

“For the people of Trumbull, this is one of the things they just love,” Tesoro said. “They love the sense of community, the beauty of this community and all of our parks and open spaces add to that beauty, so we want to maintain that and make sure we continue to bring that to our residents because they love it.”

In light of recent renovations at Twin Brooks Park, which is connected to the separate Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park, she also encouraged residents to go for a walk at the park or around town and enjoy the Trumbull’s beautiful open spaces.

“This truly is a New England town,” Tesoro said. “Take a walk any season and you’ll see how this town reflects where we live. The character and the quality of this community is just reflected in the beauty of the community, and you can really see that when you just take a walk.”

Wilpiszeski said it was wonderful to see different organizations in town working alongside the Parks and Recreation Department for a good cause.

“The department really does take a lot of pride and ownership over our facilities,” Wilpiszeski said, “and it’s great to see the community taking that same type of initiative.”

According to Wilpiszeski, the park is an especially important area of town as every veteran honored there was a Trumbull resident.

“I just think this is a really great asset in town,” Wilpiszeski said. “The way that you get here is parking over at Twin Brooks, and you have to walk over to it. It is not accessible from the road unfortunately, you do have to walk through the park, but Twin Brooks Park is a great place to walk through…this is my favorite spot in town.”

According to the town website, participants were invited to celebrate this beautification project of a pollinator pathway for insects and wildlife.

The combination of efforts brought together a likeminded mission to create a garden of native plants in Trumbull alongside wetlands, pathways and benches, with the anticipation of the garden blooming in early spring 2024 through Memorial Day, according to town officials.

Those in attendance planted bulbs during the event to begin the alluring process of what will prove to be a welcoming vision of beauty, town officials said.
