CHICAGO — A Chicago nurse has launched a petition calling for Washington Republican state Sen. Maureen Walsh to shadow a nurse for a 12-hour shift. Juliana Bindas, a nurse with Northwestern Children’s Practice, started the petition after Walsh’s April 16 comment that nurses “probably play cards” for a “considerable amount of the day.”

Walsh made the comment during discussion in her state’s legislture of a bill proposing uninterrupted rest breaks and meal times for nurses. The senator was arguing that the proposal shouldn’t apply to critical access hospitals that serve fewer patients than others.

“We are resilient, strong, and hardworking individuals [who] offer care for others, bending over backwards to give all that we can,” Bindas said.

Bindas’ Change.org petition has gained more than 700,000 signatures across the country. Her goal is to get 1 million signatures.

“I would like to take a stand and petition to have the senator experience what really happens during an RN’s 12 hour shift,” Bindas’ petition post read. “She most likely won’t be playing Uno…”

Born in Chicago, Bindas attended nursing school at Ohio University. She graduated in 2015, and accepted her first job as a registered nurse at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She was a Hematology/Oncology Stem Cell Transplant unit nurse for two years, before transferring into pediatrics at Northwestern.

An open letter has also been circulating on social media in defense of nurses, with the hashtag #NursesDeserveABreak.

“I don’t know any nurses who play cards, Senator Walsh,” the letter read. “I know nurses who care for babies who were born with their spines on the outside of their bodies and brains that won’t stop bleeding. I know nurses who hold infants that can’t stop crying because they were born addicted to heroin and [methamphetamine].

“I know nurses who roll those same babies down to the morgue when they finally do stop crying. Do you think that’s where they play cards, Senator Walsh?”

Walsh apologized for her comments Monday after public backlash.
