SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Grillestone Restaurant will close its doors for good at the end of this week after being in business for the past 14 years on Route 22 in Scotch Plains.

“It’s bittersweet,” said owner Anthony Peterpaul to Patch about his feelings on the closure. “We have been here for a long time. We made a lot of great connections and clientele, a lot of relationships were made here. It’s very bittersweet.”

The restaurant, which opened in 2010, will remain open through Saturday, Feb. 10. They will be closed beginning Super Bowl Sunday, said Peterpaul.

“Me and my cousins started to have families and it has just become too time-consuming,” said Peterpaul to Patch. “We are trying to explore other business opportunities.”

When asked if Peterpaul would open another restaurant, he said “Anything is possible.”

The restaurant at 2377 Route 22 in Scotch Plains was sold to owners at Char Steakhouse in Raritan and Char Burger and Creamery in Bridgewater.

Char Owner Michael Capezio told Patch he is opening a “more modernized version” of Char at the Scotch Plains location.

“We will be building a glass atrium with lots of fireplaces. We have a beautiful design plan and looking to hopefully break ground in the next few months,” said Capezio.

Overall the Scotch Plains location will be comparable in size to the Raritan location. The new location will offer private dining rooms, and two bars (one inside and one outside). The outside bar will be part of the glass-enclosed atrium with a retractable pergola roof.

There will also be an exterior lounge with a fireplace that looks into the restaurant.

“It is going to be great. We found a nice little niche in the market,” said Capezio who noted there is nothing like this as far as steakhouses in size and scale in the area. “We think we will be a welcome addition to the community.”

Capezio said he is hoping to open this winter, late 2024.
