Amazon has revealed a simple map of Middle Earth for its Lord of the Rings series, and it has fans theorizing like crazy.
The map, which can be fully explored here, was revealed on Twitter, and goes further east than most J.R.R. Tolkien maps do, beyond the Sea of Rhûn, which has sparked interest in many LotR fans.
The tweet is accompanied with the caption “Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,” which is of course the beginning of the poem explaining the origin of the One Ring. One enthusiastic Twitter user in particular, Sindar Propaganda, came up with numerous theories about the show based on this map. They believe the map shows Middle Earth in a post-War of Wraith, as Beleriand doesn’t appear. Spring boarding off of this, they believe it takes place in the Second or Third Age.
If that is the case, they believe it could potentially revolve around numerous locations, characters and events, like Numenor, Gil-Galad, Northern Kingdom of Men Arnor, the exiled Dunedain setteling in Arnor and Gondor. As the tweet mentions the three rings for Elven-kings, they also infer it could specifically relate to elves like Galadriel, Elrond and more.
They further speculate that the mountains east of the Sea of Rhûn could be the Orocarni (the Red Mountains), which may be a home to one or more of the four dwarven clans who lived to the East. Then, when inspecting the map’s compass rose, they found it to be reminiscent of Khuzdul runes, which is a secret and private language of dwarves.
Of course, considering LotR’s insanely expansive nature, this map could me so much more, or it could mean very little. As it bears almost no labeling, it feels like it’s designed to intrigue fans as it has, spurring discussion and excitement.
Earlier rumors suggested that the show could focus on a young Aragorn, portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Ring film trilogy, which would most definitely put the series in the Third Age. Early reports suggested that the series would take place before the main events of The Fellowship of the Ring, which lines up nicely with the Aragorn rumors.
