WON NEWSLETTER: September 20, 2021 Observer Newsletter: Big E wins WWE Championship, WWE at MSG

Big E cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on the 9/13 Raw to win the WWE championship from Bobby Lashley, signifying his switching brands and reuniting The New Day.

Born Ettore Ewen, the 35-year-old Tampa product was a state heavyweight champion wrestler at Wharton High School and football player, who went to the University of Iowa, and after college, became a powerlifter.

A mutual friend contacted Jim Ross, and he was given a WWE tryout in 2009 and WWE signed him to a deal at that time. He started as Big E Langston in Florida Championship Wrestling, which was shortened to Big E. He was popular due to his personality and those in developmental thought he could be a groundbreaking performer with his leaping ability and agility and power combination.

In 2012, he was brought up to the main roster, and on November 18, 2013, won the IC title from Curtis Axel. But his career took off in 2014 as part of the New Day tag team. The idea started out silly but ended up being tweaked by the three guys in it and the group held the Raw tag team titles twice and Smackdown version of the titles six times.

Tony Khan spoke to the Associated Press to promote tonight’s Grand Slam edition of Dynamite at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York. Khan said that AEW has gotten stronger with the more responsibility he’s taken on: “I’ve found the company has gotten stronger the more I take on. And I think the fans would agree with that. The really hardcore fans would actually really agree with that. The people who know, know the more hands-on I got about everything, the company has gotten a lot stronger.”
Khan also discussed AEW’s TV deal with TNT: “Our TNT deal is very fair. I think we’ve performed at such a high level that we’ll justify a big increase on our next deal. We are very fortunate to have their support. The timing of that deal was great, to get that in January 2020, that is a huge revenue stream for us.”
Sportico published an article on Khan and AEW.
In an interview with the New York Post, Bryan Danielson discussed Kenny Omega being his first opponent in AEW: “This is kind of one of my ideas I came in with is doing this right away. The idea came from when I came back from my retirement (in 2018) there were a lot of matches in WWE people wanted to see and we either took a long time to get to them or even didn’t get to them at all and I think we lost some of the momentum when fans were excited about me coming back from my retirement. And at the time I felt yeah, build to these matches, build to these matches. I think with so many exciting people coming into AEW  you can build to a CM Punk-Kenny Omega match. You can build to some of those matches, but I also think fans want to see something right away to get them super excited. To be fair, I want my first match in AEW to feel like a big deal. So there is no bigger deal than me versus Kenny Omega right now.

Ruby Soho was the guest on yesterday’s episode of Oral Sessions with Renee Paquette. Soho spoke about Sarah Logan surprising her at All Out:

I got pulled over on the way to the show. I was 15 minutes late. I was so excited. I was speeding like a mad woman. I got pulled over. I got a ticket, but I’m freaking out. I’m trying to calm myself down. I’m texting Sarah at different points. I said, ‘I was going to call you, but I’m trying to stay focused and be calm right now, but I’ll text you when I get to the venue.’ She texted back, ‘I’m here for you.’ In my head, I’m like, ‘Oh, she’s here for me. That’s so sweet. That’s nice of her.’ I got to the venue. I have a hood on, and everybody is trying to sneak me in. I’m still flustered because I’m late and excited. I open the door and she is the first person I see, and she has Cash (her baby boy) with her. I just started balling. I hugged her. I grabbed Cash and I held him. I said, ‘What are you guys doing here?’ She said, ‘I’m here for you.’ Apparently, she had it planned for a while, and she’s terrible at keeping secrets. She almost spilled it three or four times while she had it. She was almost telling me about Cash’s first airplane trip before I was ever supposed to know about it. It was amazing because she’s always been there for all of our milestones in our career. We’ve been together since we first started, and for her to be there made it that much more special.
