“If you take anything away from reading this book, it’s be careful when you reach the job of your dreams, it may become a nightmare.”
Pop quiz for wrestling fans, please name the famous wrestling ring announcers. My list includes Howard Finkel, Gary Cappetta, Dave Penzer, Jeremy Borash & Marc Lawrence. Now name the current ring announcers. Outside of ROH’s Bobby Cruise & WWN Live’s Joanna Rose who is there? Can you name the WWE ring announcers? One name that is missing on the screen is JUSTIN ROBERTS who was the voice of WWE live events, TV shows and PPV’s for over a decade. Since he has left WWE he took time to write down his journey from Chicago wrestling kid to the middle of the ring at WrestleMania. The end result is entitled: “BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE: YOUR BACKSTAGE PASS THROUGH MY WWE JOURNEY.” The book comes with a foreword from former ECW/WWE superstar Tommy Dreamer.
As just mentioned Justin grew up in Chicago a fan of the WWF, taking in shows locally and on PPV. Through tons of hard work and determination, he went from working for Dale Gagne’s AWA reboot & other small promotions to the infamous Toughman competitions and finally to the WWE. That should be the story in itself but now comes the journey of being part of a promotion that takes zero days off and on certain days travels close to one hundred thousand miles in one day.
If you take anything away from reading this book, it’s be careful when you reach the job of your dreams, it may become a nightmare. Justin admits he won’t ever be returning to the WWE so he holds nothing back on his dealing with Executive Producer Kevin Dunn, current head of talent Triple H, principal owners Vince & Stephanie McMahon & others. As someone who has done ring announcing on a minor level I was aghast reading Justin recount of working events and not having a script to run off at any point, going only from cues given by the timekeeper who was on headset with the producer. You read that correct, the timekeeper knew more about the creative process than the ring announcer.
The book also deals with a bully mentality that existed and possibly still does thanks to John “Bradshaw” Layfield & Triple H, whom Justin outlines as someone who terrorized & taunted him for years. I won’t go into much detail I will let Justin do that in his own words. He also gives tributes to his friends CM Punk, Dolph Ziggler, Tommy Dreamer, the Miz, Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder plus his memories of Connor Michalek, the young eight year old fan who was at ringside for WrestleMania 30. You will be disgusted how WWE took Justin’s role in introducing Connor to the company & wiped it from history.
