The shows opens up with a video package recapping last week’s matches where Kalisto defeated Lince Dorado and Roderick Strong took down Hideo Itami to move on to the second round of the Cruiserweight Championship Tournament.
Vic Joseph and Nigel McGuinness welcome us to the show as they preview tonight’s matches wherein Drew Gulak will face Tony Nese and Akira Tozawa will face Mark Andrews which is the first match of the night.
Before the first match of the night we head backstage where Dasha Fuentes is interviewing Mark Andrews. Dasha asks Mandrews what it is like to come from the UK for this opportunity. Mandrews says that he is excited and people all around the world are talking about this tournament. He also says that he is confident about heading to WrestleMania 34.
Mark Andrews vs. Akira Tozawa (Cruiserweight Championship First Round Tournament Match): The match starts with some “Ah!” chants. Mandrews focuses on Tozawa’s leg and tries to keep him grounded as we cut to 205 Live GM Drake Maverick looking on from the back. Mandrews then tries to stretch out Tozawa. Mandrews with a dropkick to the face and goes for the pin, but only a two count. Back and forth chops to the chest with Tozawa landing a right jab to the jaw to stop that exchange. Tozawa hits a standing senton that lands clean on Mandrews, Tozawa then goes for a pin, but only a two count. Tozawa gains control of the match as he works away on Andrews. We get a lot of submissions early on between the two competitors. Tozawa tries to toss Mandrews out, but Mandrews whips him around using the ropes and kicks Tozawa and springboard crossbodies him back into the ring and goes for the pin, but only a two count. Tozawa recovers and nails Mandrews with a shining wizard. Tozawa goes up top, but Mandrews rolls out to the floor. Tozawa immediately follows with a suicide dive with a somewhat sketchy landing. Action is back in the ring as Tozawa heads to the top again. Mandrews forces him off the top, hits a running knee, then a northern lights suplex, then a standing corkscrew senton and goes for a pin, but only a two count.
Tozawa with multiple forearms to Mandrews, but Mandrews stops that with a kick to the stomach of Tozawa. Mandrews tries for a tornado DDT, but gets denied. Mandrews then hits a nice modified stunner and goes for a pin, but only a two count. Tozawa is put on the top ropes and Mandrews heads up with him and tries for a hurricanrana. Tozawa halts that and goes for a super powerbomb. Mandrews reverse it with a nice hurricanrana and goes for a pin, but only a two count. Mandrews goes up top again and tries for a shooting star press, but rolls through. Tozawa with a kick and tries for a submission but Mandrews uses his momentum for the pin and gets the win. Winner & Advances to the Next Round: Mark Andrews
We head backstage where Dasha Fuentes is interviewing Jack Gallagher who will face Mustafa Ali next week. Drake Maverick shows up and says that his suit and tie is not a proper wrestling attire. Maverick says that Gallagher needs to sort himself out and come back next week with a proper gear on.
The final member of the field of 16 is Buddy Murphy. We get a video package of Buddy Murphy talking about how making weight was the hardest thing he has ever done. Drake Maverick presides over a weigh in. Murphy makes it at 204.4 lbs, and he will face Ariya Daivari next week.
Before the next match, we head backstage where Drew Gulak is getting ready for his match against Nese and he is looking super serious. Nese is also getting prepped as he checks himself out in the mirror.
Drew Gulak vs. Tony Nese (Cruiserweight Championship First Round Tournament Match): Gulak tries for a handshake and Nese kicks his hand away to start the match. Collar and elbow tie up and Nese immediately throws Gulak down to the mat. Gulak works over Nese’s neck and goes for a lot of mat work to start things off. Nese with a flurry attacks and a sweep kick, then goes for a pin, but only a two count. Action is on the floor as Gulak hits a suplex slamming Nese hard on the floor. The referee starts a ten count and gets to nine before Nese gets in the ring. Gulak goes for a quick pin, but only a two count. Nese with some more strikes and a spinning kick that drops Gulak. Nese with a jumping clothesline that puts Gulak right back down, then Nese goes for a pin, but only a two count. Nese tries for a pump-handle, but gets denied. Nese throws Gulak to the mat and goes for a pin, but only a two count. Gulak with a dropkick. Gulak drops Nese again and goes for a pin, but only a two count. Nese charges in, but Gulak grabs him by the beard and starts slapping Nese in his face. Gulak hits a high elevation suplex with a bridge and goes for a pin, but Nese kicks out at 2.
Gulak applies a body scissors lock at Nese and Nese tries to get the ropes, but gets denied. Nese lifts Gulak up and over the ropes to get a rope break. Nese with a sweep kick to send Gulak to the floor and then hits a fosbury flop. Nese throws Gulak back in and goes to the top and missed a front flip. Gulak tries for a dragon sleeper, but Nese gets away and drives Gulak to the mat and goes for a pin, but only a two count. Gulak tries for an armbar, but Nese dead-lifts him and launches him into the turnbuckle. Nese tries for the running nese in the corner, but Gulak rolls out to the floor. Nese follows and gets him back in the ring. Gulak knocks Nese off the apron and he crashes into the announce table. The referee checks on Nese. Gulak goes back out and throws him into the announce table twice. Back in the ring, Gulak with a big clothesline and hits a double powerbomb. He finally locks in a dragon sleeper, but Nese is out, and the referee stops the match. Winner via Referee Stoppage & Advances to the Next Round: Drew Gulak
After the match, Gulak approaches the Cruiserweight Title and holds it up and yells “This is mine!” to end the show.
