MOORHEAD, Minn. — Minnesota State University Moorhead senior wrestler Blake Bosch’s quest for a national championship begins on Friday when he faces Anthony Sparacio of Long Island University-Post in the opening round at the Division II championships in Birmingham, Ala. Session 1 begins at 11 a.m.

“Since I got here my goal has ultimately to win the national tournament,” Bosch said. “However, I’ve matured our the last four years; as a freshman I was almost happy just qualifying for nationals, now as a senior I’m going in expecting to win.”

Bosch, the Super Region III champion at 133, is making his fourth straight trip at the national meet. He is 29-1 this season and has won 22 matches in a row. Bosch’s only loss came to Division I wrestler Brian Peska of Nebraska, 5-4 at the Holiday Inn Open in Nov. 19.

Sparacio, a freshman, is 19-7 this year and finished fourth at the Super Region I Championships on Saturday.

Bosch is second all-time at MSUM with 112 victories, trailing only Nate Hendrickson, who had 121.

The Wishek, N.D., native is a four-time national qualifier and two-time All-American. Each year he has improved at nationals: his first year he went 1-2, in his second year in 2014-15 he finished eighth and earned All-American honors, and in 2015-16 he finished fourth to pick up another All-American honor.

“My approach is going to be the same as it has been all year long,” Bosch said. “Win each position and let the little things take care of the big things. Over the next few days I will continue to do all of the small things, such as getting enough sleep, eating right and working as hard as I can. I can’t control everything, but I can control those things.”

Bosch is seeking to become MSUM’s first wrestling national champion since 2006 when Nate Baker accomplished the feat.
