Funimation founder and CEO Gen Fukunaga has voiced some criticisms of the Evangelion franchise going over to Netflix, claiming Funimation would have done a better job handling the property.
In an interview with Polygon, Funkunaga said “Honestly, Netflix is willing to significantly overpay for something like [Evangelion] and outbid anybody by multiples, no matter what their [return on investment] is. I’m 100-percent sure that we’d have done a much better job brand-managing it and turning it back into what it was… It’s unfortunate for Funimation — we really wanted that title.
“Had My Hero Academia gone onto Netflix, it would have just dropped on the platform with any number of titles and probably would have died as a brand. It would have just been another brand on the platform. Funimation markets it 360 — theatrical marketing, etc. — gets it available on iTunes and Xbox and PlayStation and gets it on other streaming platforms on its own, and really promotes it 360… if it had gone on Netflix, it would have just gone up there.”
Netflix announced that Neon Genesis Evangelion and the movies Evangelion: Death True² and The End of Evangelion would be hitting the streaming service late last month.
Doubling down on anime acquisitions, Netflix will also be bringing Ultraman, Rilakkuma and Kaoru, 7Seeds, and Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac to its service at various points in 2019. Three new anime based on Pacific Rim, Altered Carbon and Ghost in the Shell are currently in development.

Aggretsuko follows Retsuko, a Tokyo office worker who deals with her frustrations with daily sexism and other issues in her workplace through solo death metal karaoke. Even when presenting such serious topics, Aggretsuko manages to still make its themes approachable through its great writing and unique cast of characters. Few shows are able to tell such relatable stories about modern workplace environments, let alone analyze the importance of mentorships and the challenges presented when glorifying romantic relationships. “,”height”:1080,”width”:1920,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/12/06/aggretsuko-1544125059361.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/12/06/aggretsuko-1544125059361_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”IGNu0027s Best Anime Series of 2018″,”relativePosition”:”02″,”albumTotalCount”:”07″},{“caption”:”A Place Further than the UniversernrnrnProduction Studio: MadhousernStreaming Service(s): CrunchyrollrnrnrnShirase Kobuchizawau2019s mother has been missing for three years since her expedition to Antarctica, and Shirase is determined to find her.
