RICHMOND, VA — KFC is jumping into the chicken sandwich craze, but it’s going one step further right here in Virginia: it is putting its chicken between two glazed doughnuts.

Multiple outlets are reporting that in the wake of the insanity over Popeyes’ new chicken sandwich offering, KFC is testing a “chicken and donuts” menu item for a limited time at more than 40 locations in Norfolk and Richmond (as well as in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).

Customers will be able to choose between a basket with chicken on the bone or chicken tenders with one or two doughnuts, or they can just get a sandwich with the doughnuts as the bread.

Business Insider reports that the meal will cost $5.50 for one doughnut and $7.50 for two, with the sandwich priced at $6 ($8 as a combo). You can also add a doughnut to any meal for $1.

This isn’t KFC’s only unusual marketing move. Last week, the chicken chain announced that it was releasing a dating-simulator video game on Steam called, “I Love You Colonel Sanders.” It will be available Sept. 24.

The chicken sandwich craze all started pretty innocuously last month. Popeyes posted a picture of its new chicken sandwich on Twitter on Aug. 12. “Chicken. Brioche. Pickles. New. Sandwich. Popeyes. Nationwide. So. Good. Forgot. How. Speak. In. Complete. Sandwiches. I mean, sentences,” the tweet reads.

Fast-food joints unveil new food items all the time. However, this one was different thanks to social media.

A week later, Chick-fil-A made what appeared to everyone as a snide subtweet: “Bun + Chicken + Pickles = all the [heart emoji] for the original.”

Things really blew up when Popeyes tweeted directly at Chick-fil-A in response: “… y’all good?” That tweet has more than 325,000 likes and 87,000 retweets as of Sept. 17.

That prompted other fast-food restaurants to jump into the social media fray, and suddenly the Popeyes chicken sandwich was the hottest menu item in town. Time will tell if KFC can steal the spotlight.
