ANNAPOLIS, MD — A beautiful pooch named K-Dog faced an uncertain future when he ended up in a high-kill shelter in West Virginia a couple of years ago. Thankfully, K-Dog was rescued from there and transferred to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. But sadly, he sat forlornly for almost two years at the local shelter — until now.

After almost 800 days at the shelter, a dog mom stepped forward and expressed interest in adopting K-Dog. She had seen K-Dog’s heartbreaking story in the news, shelter office manager Nick Crawford told Patch, and she knew he was the dog for her. Shelter staffers couldn’t be happier, they shared on Facebook.

Crawford told Patch that K-Dog and his new mom matched well. She went to the shelter to speak with his handlers and caretakers first, then she and K-Dog met several times.

“It all worked out perfectly. We took the adoption video and shared on Facebook because we knew that everybody who loved him so much and those who had learned about him would want to celebrate the occasion,” Crawford said.

In fact, before he was officially adopted, all of the shelter volunteers who had worked with him stopped by for one last big group playdate before K-Dog left the shelter, tail a wagging, headed for his new home.

“He’s been with us through a lot. While we will miss him with every fiber of our being, we are over the moon happy for him! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for taking the time to share this special boy. It’s because of you that we were able to get the word out and find him that special person,” the shelter posted.

Patch first shared K-Dog’s heartbreaking story in the hopes of spreading the word and help him find a home. Staff and volunteers immediately fell in love with K-Dog when he first arrived at the shelter and decided to take his sorrowful tale to social media, where people learned about his plight. Those who met K-Dog couldn’t believe he’d been at the shelter for so long considering how sweet he is.

“K-Dog gets looked over because he’s fine sitting in the back, lying on his bed and watching everyone pass him by. We think he feels that this is now his home. But if people just gave him the chance, they would see what an incredible dog he is. Being here for 758 days has not hurt his spirit at all,” Lindi Johnston, animal caretaker at SPCA of Anne Arundel County, told Patch before K-Dog was adopted.

Now that K-Dog has settled into his new home, the shelter encourages people to check out the other adoptables in need of a home just like K-Dog blessedly has.

“While K-Dog found his forever home, we have many other lovable animals still hoping their special person or family will come for them. You never know who will steal your heart,” they posted on Facebook.
