The GST Council on Saturday cut rates on 88 items, including footwear, refrigerator, washing machine and small screen TV, while the widely demanded sanitary napkins have been exempted from the levy.

The napkins which earlier used to come under the 12 percent GST slab will not have any tax being imposed on them, July 27 onwards. When the Goods and Services Tax was imposed, the government was criticised for not keeping the product out of the tax slab. The issue was seen as a sensitive topic than an economic one.
