FARMINGTON, CT — Residents needn’t worry about Farmington officials planking, doing TikTok dances, undertaking dangerous challenges, or gorging themselves on junk food.

But following a recently announced communications initiative in town, they can now track the Town of Farmington’s affairs via social media in the age after MySpace.

The Farmington Town Council earlier this month was updated about a social media initiative at the town level whereby sites were created for Facebook. “X” (formerly Twitter), and Instagram.

With many towns already undertaking the venture, Farmington had not done so, instead utilizing a website to get messages out there.

The goal is to provide residents and community members with a diversified means of releasing information on many town issues.

It came out of Farmington Town Manager Kathleen Blonski’s office, with a recommendation to expand the town’s social media platforms and coverage.

Previously, Farmington’s online presence was, basically, a local business website called “Explore Farmington.”

“While we have historically used Explore Farmington as our primary tool for social outreach, I am pleased to announce that we have launched official Town of Farmington accounts including Facebook, Instagram, and X,” said Blonski in her report to the council at its last meeting June 11.

“Explore Farmington will continue to provide information on local events and community updates, connecting Farmington’s businesses with our residents.”

“The town’s social media pages will provide town news and community highlights (proclamations, public notices, and general announcements), making information that is on our website more accessible and from a reliable and trusted source,” she wrote in her report.

Council members didn’t formally vote on the measure itself but approved the acceptance of the town manager’s report, which included the initiative within it.

“We did expand our communication plan and our social media efforts,” Blonski said to the council on June 11. “That was launched earlier this week.”
