TRUMBULL, CT — Truckloads of tires illegally dumped at Old Mine Park in May were finally cleaned up earlier this year, according to town officials.

Cynthia Katske, chief administrative officer for First Selectman Vicki Tesoro’s office, said Friday in an email to Patch the tires were finally removed from the wooded area in mid-January.

“The operation took about a week and was completed on Jan. 19,” Katske said.

The work was performed by Grillo Services LLC, a Milford-based landscape supply and organic recycling company.

In total, the removal work cost the town $49,000, according to Katske.

“We do not know the number of tires,” Katske said, “just that they filled up seven 40-yard containers.”

In May, police said they arrested two men accused of dumping a truckload of used tires near a retail parking lot bordering Old Mine Park.

At that time, Police Lt. Brian Weir said the department had received reports of hundreds of vehicle tires having been dumped in the wooded area but were initially unable to determine who had discarded them.

Weir also noted the quantity of tires was large enough to suggest multiple truckloads had been discarded in this same area.
