JOLIET, IL — It has been 17 months since the Taste of Joliet for the summer of 2022 came to a close, and now a civil lawsuit has been filed against the Taste of Joliet, Joliet Park District and Windy City Amusements by a woman who claims her child was injured while riding one of the children’s roller coasters.
Elizabeth Ortiz, according to her new Will County lawsuit, is the mother of A.L., who is a minor. Ortiz and her child reside in Will County and on June 25, 2022, Ortiz’s child attended the Taste of Joliet and was riding the children’s roller coaster “when the air hose snapped off the roller coaster causing injuries to A.L.’s head and face,” the lawsuit claims.
The lawsuit includes a signed affidavit from Jess Jordan, who states that “as attorney for Elizabeth Ortiz, as guardian and next friend of A.L., a minor, I have reviewed the facts of this case and have determined that the total amount of money damages sought is greater than $30,000.”

The lawsuit is only two pages in length. Attorney Jess Jordan of the Chicago law firm of McCready, Garcia & Leet on West Madison Avenue “prays for damages in an amount greater than $50,000” plus costs and other relief the court deems just or equitable.
According to Ortiz, her child was exercising reasonable care for her safety and free from contributory negligence. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants had a duty to maintain the roller coaster in a reasonably safe manner and condition for those on the premises, including A.L.

The lawsuit contends that the defendants failed to train and instruct its employees or agents regarding the dangerous conditions and failed to supervise and maintain the roller coaster for dangerous conditions.
None of the defendants in the case have filed their response to the civil litigation.
