NEW YORK CITY — The Statue of Liberty briefly shut down as hundreds of Jewish anti-war protesters called for a seize fire in Gaza.
The sit-in Monday — which was extensively documented on social media — saw demonstrators from Jewish Voice For Peace NYC take over the iconic statue’s platform.
“Never again for anyone,” stated a banner held by the protesters.

“We refuse to allow a genocide to be carried out in our names,” the group tweeted. “Ceasefire now to save lives!”
The protest was planned in secret by activists who blended in with sightseers on the 11 a.m. ferry from Lower Manhattan to Liberty Island, New York reported.

Once on the island, the protesters gathered on the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal, unfurled banners and occupied the monument for roughly 20 minutes, according to the report.
New York City has seen daily protests in the month since Hamas forces attacked Israel and slaughtered civilians. The protests have set many city dwellers on edge as hate crimes have been reported against both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian people.
The Jewish Voice For Peace group — which has organized against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians — previously occupied Grand Central Terminal during rush hour Oct. 27.
