ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Thomas Mosley, 21, fatally stabbed the mother of his child more than 100 times at her St. Petersburg apartment complex, according to a St. Petersburg Police Department arrest affidavit.
Payshun Jeffery, 20, was found dead in her unit at Lincoln Shores Apartments, 11601 Fourth St. N., Thursday around 2:30 p.m. An Amber Alert was then issued for her two-year-old son, Taylen Mosley, who was missing from the apartment.
After a two-day search, Taylen’s body was found being carried by an alligator in Lake Maggiore on Friday evening. The gator was shot and killed so the child’s body could be recovered.

Thomas Mosley was arrested Friday around 10 p.m. and faces two first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Taylen and his mother, police said.
Jeffery’s family visited the apartment Wednesday around 4:30 p.m. to celebrate Thomas’ birthday. When they left around 5:15 p.m., only the defendant, Jeffery and their son remained at the home, according to the affidavit.
Thomas left the apartment and went to Lake Maggiore around 8:45 p.m. before going to his mother’s house, which is 10 blocks from the lake, at 9 p.m. He had severe cuts to his hands and arms that were “consistent with injuries caused by slippage during a knife attack” and was admitted to St. Anthony’s Hospital that night, police said.

When Jeffery’s family didn’t hear from her Thursday morning, they went to her apartment to check on her. When they saw blood on the sidewalk leading to her unit, they called the building’s management team to check on her. A staff member found her body.
A bloody fingerprint belonging to Thomas was found on a bottle of cleaning product under a bed at the apartment, police said. A bloody shoeprint with a Gucci emblem was seen on the bathroom floor, where Jeffery’s body was found.
Pashun Jeffery’s Family Speaks Out
In the days following the murders of Pashun Jeffery and her son, Taylen, her family is speaking out.
Her mother, Lakita Denson, and aunt, Theo Brickhouse Sails, who said they’re “heartbroken” by the loss, thanked the community for its support in a letter they shared with the St. Petersburg Police Department.
“We want to start by thanking everyone in the St. Petersburg area, Florida, and across the United States for praying and sending positive thoughts our way in the past few days as we grieved Pashun and searched for Taylen,” they wrote. “We especially send our gratitude to St. Petersburg police and all law enforcement working day and night in the search for Taylen and the concerned citizens who shared helpful information.”
They’ve launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help pay for funeral services for the young mother and her son and to support the family. The fundraiser was initially established to help raise money for the search for Taylen, before his body was found.
Jeffery, a St. Petersburg native, attended Benito Middle School, Boca Ciega High School and Northeast High School, where she was an honors student, according to the GoFundMe page.
The 20-year-old worked at the CVS at 845 Fourth Street N., “perhaps smiling at you when you visited the store,” her mother and aunt wrote. “We will miss her smile, joyous laughter and commentary on life.”
She was also a dedicated mother, her family said. “Pashun knew being a single mom would be challenging, but she was determined to provide for her son.”
She and Taylen, described as “a sweet and happy toddler,” had a close bond, the family said. “During Pashun’s work breaks, she would Facetime so that she could spend every moment possible with him. During the day, Taylen would grab anyone’s phone and pretend to call his mom. To see them together and their love for each other was a blessing. We will remember their love and will keep them in our hearts.”
