The Open Championship was special this year because Shane Lowry won his first major on his home soil at Royal Portrush. The Open Championship hadn’t been played at Royal Portrush since 1951, adding to the excitement. But when they announced Shane as the Champion Golfer of the year, he held the Claret Jug high wearing nothing but some Northern Ireland rain on his wrist. Thankfully he did the proper thing and put on a watch during the parade to celebrate his victory. While celebrating with one of golf’s most prized trophies, Shane was seen wearing what looks like a Rolex Datejust 41 Stainless Steel fluted (Ref: 126334-0003) with a silver dial.
Shane’s Datejust 41mm is in the newer version of the one we saw on Chez Reavie at the Travelers. Shane’s reference has a silver, sunburst style, dial and luminous markers on the hour. The Rolex Datejust was introduced in 1945 to celebrate Rolex’s 40th anniversary and the Datejust II was a larger version (41mm vs 36mm) introduced in 2009. In 2016 Rolex introduced the Datejust 41 that is an updated version of the Datejust II. The movement in the Datejust 41 is a self-winding Calibre 3235 that is certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
The 3235 brings a new Chronergy escapement to increase efficiency and 70 hours of power reserve. The Rolex Oyster case is made of 904L Stainless steel and has a silver dial with luminous hour markers. That dial is covered by a sapphire crystal and surrounded by a fluted, 18k white gold bezel. The fluted bezel on the Datejust 41 is a slight bit thinner than the one on the previous Datejust II. The Oyster band is made from solid 904L Stainless Steel links that offer greater resistance to corrosion and takes a higher polish than other stainless steel.
